Self care is easy to say, but what does it mean exactly. Well it can mean different things for different people. It can mean a quiet cup of coffee in the morning before the rest of the family wakes up. It can mean sitting down with your book after a hectic day to read a chapter or two or an at home spa day with a nice bath, facial, deep condition, face mask, etc. Whatever it means for you, it’s important that you make time for it.

This day in age, burnout is a real thing and it can happen quickly and without any notice. With our phones in our hands 24/7 and our families with full schedules it’s hard to ever turn “off”, if that’s even possible. But it IS possible to “check out” for a little bit (5 minutes or 20 minutes) for your mental sanity.

Also, side note, but how dreamy is this bathroom in Joy’s she-shed?! I know I’d conduct some self care here!

Determining your Self Care

So how do you determine what your ideal self care is? Let us help you! If you could have 10-20 minutes to do whatever you wanted to do, what would it be? Your answer is your self care. It could be as simple as just laying or sitting quietly. It could be going for a short drive with the windows down and your favorite song on. Do these things to figure out what your self care is:

  • Think about what your ideal time spent “alone” would be

  • Determine if that is feasible within your daily constraints, if it’s not, think of the next best alternative

  • Do you need any items to accomplish this? Have them readily available

  • If possible, “schedule” your self care time. This can be daily or weekly, depending on your need

  • Hold yourself accountable for actually completing your self care, you cannot pour from an empty cup!

  • Once you start doing this regularly it will be come a habit and part of your routine
